New Draft on National Policy for Women – what‘s new?

Almost after 15 years of gap, Indian government has come up with a new draft policy for women. Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) produced the new draft policy on women – it aims to empower women by following “socially inclusive rights-based approach”.

The last National Policy for Empowerment of Women when it was formulated – its focus was to make women equal recipients of welfare schemes. This new draft envisages to not only getting the benefits under government schemes but also a proper set of rights provided to them so they can contribute to development process. The positive impact on women welfare can be seen in next 15 to 20 years, Meneka Gandhi said in a press conference on 17th May.

The new policy is based on the recommendations made by Pam Rajput Committee which was set up in 2012. The committee submitted its report last year which included draft on national policy for women and an action plan to end violence against women.

What’s New

  • The objective of this policy is to create a sustainable socio-economic, political empowerment, empowering them with rights and entitlements, gender equality and justice.
  • A society where women attain their full potential and are able to participate as equal partners in all spheres of life. Developing policies, programs and schemes that will create employment opportunities and rights for women.
  • The emerging issues has been also been included in the report such as – making cyber spaces safe for women, redistribution of gender roles, reducing unpaid care work, review of criminalization of marital rape within the framework women’s human rights etc.
  • The new policy also envisions for suggested dependent care leave not just for working women, but working men too.
