Scheme of Setting up of State Spinal Injury Centres

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (Govt. of India) launched the scheme of Setting up of State Spinal Injury Centres under the department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. It aims to reduce the disability of patients who suffer from spinal injury which leads to various complications like- terminal respiratory and urinary tract infections, bedsores, deep vein thrombosis, etc. Hence the Government of India has taken the initiative to set up spinal injury centres across the states. This scheme has been in effect since 2015.

Objectives:

  • Dedicated Outpatient Department (OPD)
  • To provide 12 bed facility in each center
  • To make use of the existing Orthopaedic OT with additional instruments
  • Rehabilitation facility
  • Orthotic and Prosthetic department and assistive technology
  • Teaching and Training

Benefits:

  • Medical assistance for persons suffering from spinal injuries
  • It will give new life to the thousands of people suffering from spinal injury

Implementing Agency:

  • Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities

Contribution of Central, State and UT Government:

  • The area required for setting up the centers shall be provided by the concerned state and UT
  • The concerned state and UTs shall also bear the infrastructure cost
  • The concerned State/UT Government will bear the cost involved in the management of two beds of State Spinal Injury Centre
  • The central government shall bear the non- recurring expenditure
