PM Narendra Modi launches Sampada scheme for value addition of agriculture produce

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced ‘Sampada’- a food processing scheme, news agency ANI reported. He further stressed that modernisation of agriculture sector is vital for an economy, adding that government wants to strengthen the farmer community by doubling their incomes. “Farmers’ income should be doubled by 2022, it’s time to increase our progress gradually,” Modi said. The new projects in Assam are aimed to accelerate the development of the state and other North-Eastern states, according to a PTI report.

Earlier in the day, Modi inaugurated ‘India’s longest’, Dhola-Sadiya bridge in the state. May 26 marks the day when Modi was sworn-in as the Prime Minister after leading the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a massive victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Modi, after the inauguration, addressed the media and dedicated the bridge to people of Assam. The Prime Minister started his speech with the slogan of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ and then and asked the people of Assam to take out their mobile phones and start the flash to celebrate the special day. He was accompanied by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

Prime Minister congratulated the Assam government for the construction of this bridge and said it will be named after Bhupen Hazarika. Speaking about BJP’s one year rule in the state PM said, “within one year of BJP rule in Assam, the state got rid of a lot of problems.”

India’s longest, the total length of the Dhola-Sadiya bridge project, including the approach roads on each side, is 28.50 km while the length of the bridge itself is 9.15 km. The bridge will reduce the distance from Rupai on NH-37 in Assam to Meka/Roing on NH-52 in Arunachal Pradesh by 165 KM. Apart from this, Prime Minister is also scheduled to lay the foundation stone for an AIIMS at Changsari and will address the nation in Guwahati.
