India’s First Underwater Tunnel will be in Amravati soon

India’s newest state capital Amravati probably will get an underwater tunnel in river Krishna very soon. The state government’s this new initiative is more related to attracting tourists and government is keen on giving an international outlook to state capital. As per the detailed master plan, a transparent road tunnel will be built to connect Amravati with the commercial capital Vijayawada.

There are approximately 2oo such tunnels around the world and in the beginning of this year, China also announced to build the world’s longest underwater tunnel approximately 76 miles long. Singapore will help Andhra Pradesh government in constructing this along with smart city project of Amravati.

Apart from this, the Union Shipping Minister conducted a feasibility of other two such tunnels – Kakdwip and Sagar Island in West Bengal and Chatham and Bamboo Flat in Andaman Nicobar islands. Some officials argue that underwater tunnels are less costly than building a bridge. So, government has asked consultants to submit a report on economic and technological feasibility and costing.
