- Under Swachh Vidyalaya mission, Prime Minister Narendra Modi set August 15th as a deadline for building 417,796 toilets in government schools.
- From the PMO to districts and blocks are on their toes and are struggling to ensure every government school has the promised toilet in place before PM’s second Independence Day speech.
- 7,030 toilets (i.e. 1.6 per cent of the total target) were yet to be completed by the evening of 13th August. Orissa had maximum pending toilets (i.e. over 6600) whereas Bihar and Chhattisgarh had 90 incomplete ones.
- 6,769 toilets were yet to be completed by PSUs and 253 by the private sector.
Among PSUs Coal India Limited had the maximum pendency while among corporates Infosys completed just five of the 252
toilets it was approved.
