Farmers’ crops to be insured under PM Modi’s scheme in Tamil Nadu district

Officials in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district have been ordered to make sure that farmers taking up “kuruvai” paddy cultivation, insure their crops under the Prime Minister’s insurance scheme.

Chairing a review meeting here on Thursday, District Collector A Annadurai directed Agriculture Department officials to set up nodal centres in each block for facilitating enrolment of farmers under the scheme before July 31.

He also said that 95,790 farmers had insured their crop during 2016-’17 Samba season and their claims were being processed as banks accounts were being verified.

The premium per acre of “kuruvai” paddy is Rs. 428, he added.

As many as 2,037 farmers were awarded Rs. 1.42 crore as crop insurance claim for 2015-’16.
