‘Atm Nirbhar’ Scheme for beggars and ragpickers in Delhi

NDMC is planning to launch an initiative called Atm-Nirbahr, where beggars and ragpickers will made responsible for managing toilet complexes in Delhi. The New Delhi Municipal Corporation will provide institutional help in forming cooperatives of beggars and rag pickers under self-dependent scheme.

After the formation of these unique cooperatives, the work of managing public toilets will be handed over to them by the NDMC. The DEMS with the help of NGOs working with these people will work for setting up cooperatives which will be initially given responsibility to run public toilets in JJ clusters. Later on they may be associated with upkeep of toilets of other categories,” according to Department of Environment Management Services (DEMS) Committee of NDMC.
